Your field clipboard can be more than just something to write on.  It can be an information center.

Taped and clipped into and onto the clipboard are stratigraphic sections, field area maps, %-composition charts and tables of standard geologic symbols for lithology as well as maps and cross-sections.  Note the plastic sheet covers (available at any office supply store) to keep things fairly weather resistant.

The clipboard is aluminum rather than plastic, so it's strong and can serve as a place on which to rest your knee or butt when knee pads or a soft seat aren't available and all you've got is the rocky ground.

Within the clipboard's storage area are spare rulers, protractors and pens.  You can't have too many of these in the field.

I know it's blasphemous, but your field clipboard is a more important tool than your rock hammer...

...the loss of your field clipboard could be disastrous to much of the entire project's work.

Both retro-reflective and fluorescent orange tape has been applied liberally to the edges and back of the clipboard thereby making it highly visible in any work environment.
