Insect Repellent

PARENT PAGE

Most insect repellents can NOT repel all the bugs you'll need them to.  Some repel mosquitoes, but not flies.  Others repel flies, but not mosquitoes.  Make sure the repellent you're using has at least the following TWO active ingredients:

DEET

R-326

  • For repelling mosquitoes.

  • Not effective against flies.

  • Sometimes listed as:

    • N,N-diethyl-3-methly-benzamide

    • N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide.

  • For repelling flies.

  • Not effective against mosquitoes.

Spray-on varieties come highly recommended, specifically, Sawyer Gold™ Composite Spray.  It is a combination repellent that is very effective against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and gnats and has added repellents specifically for black flies, deer flies and stable flies.  This repellent contains no alcohol which has been shown to increase absorption of Deet.

When used according to the instructions, DEET is quite safe.  It is the most effective insect repellent on the market.  The US military has been using it for half a century without harmful side effects.
