When you need to do some work on
private property, be sure to secure permission not only to be
there, but to take samples if necessary. Note that such permission
may have to be in writing and will possibly include an agreement that you
or others will not sue the property owner(s) if you're injured or killed.
Countless project areas have been permanently closed to field research due
to careless violations of the following rules:
-
Do NOT climb over fences, carefully go under (if
possible) or walk to a gate. I know, this is a pain, but fencing is
VERY expensive to maintain and you or future geologists may easily lose
permission to work on the land where a fence has been ruined.
-
Stay in the area you're authorized to be in.
That is, you can PROPERLY cross fence lines provided you do not cross into an
area you don't have permission to be in. After all, it wouldn't be
pleasant to walk into a pen with a Brahma bull! Again, by doing so, you
may easily forfeit permission for yourself or others to work on the land.
-
Leave everything as you find it! If
you come across a water spigot or well that is flowing, leave it flowing -- even
if it's "flooding" the ground. If you pass through a gate that is already
open, leave it open. Conversely, if the gate is closed, be SURE to close
it after you pass through.
-
Some innocuous
looking items like
cyanide
guns can be very dangerous. Leave them alone!
-
If the owner says no smoking, he/she
means
NO
SMOKING!
