There are
numerous reasons for the geologist to be a non-smoker:
|
|
As a geologist, you may spend a lot of time
hiking off-trail at
high altitudes in
hot weather while carrying a great deal
of gear. Such treks often last for 10-hours and may continue
day-after-day for weeks on end. |
 |
Some outdoor regions are
privately owned and the
owner may not want you smoking. Other regions may be too dry with too great
a
fire hazard for you to smoke. If you do
so anyway, you could start a wildfire and consequently be sued and even go to
prison. |

Mines sometimes harbor explosive gases or dust. An
absentminded urge to
smoke or toy with a lighter during a moment of idle time could have
serious consequences. |
 |
You're already at an
increased risk for skin cancer, why add lung, mouth and throat cancer
to that list? |

Cigarette butts last a long time in any
environment. If you simply extinguish your cigarettes and
leave them on the ground instead of packing them out, you're
littering. |

In some
exceptionally delicate environments such as caves and the
Antarctic, the added pollution from smoke, tobacco fibers, ash,
butts, matches and the packaging itself are intolerable not only as
pollutants, but as added weight in the "unnecessary gear" category. |
