Take a Buddy

Never go into the field alone -- especially into a mine or quarry
Always have at least one other person with you when working outdoors.  It's all too easy to "vanish" even when in sight of civilization.

It's not necessary that you work side-by-side with your buddy all day, but if you will be working at a distance, make sure you each have a whistle  in addition to two-way radios to alert the other when assistance is urgently needed.  As a rule, whistles are for EMERGENCIES ONLY and they make excellent backups for those times when one person has failed to turn his/her radio on..

General Hazards of Working Alone

Though unlikely, some emergency situations will absolutely require the presence of a buddy because once you encounter a problem of this type, you will be unable to save yourself.  For examples, see the pages on hostile encounters, mines and quarries and big game trapping.
