On average, there are over 42,000 forest fires each year that torch nearly one-million acres of land.  As a geologist, there is a small chance you will one day find yourself facing down a wildfire in the field.  Here are some tips for you to follow if you ever find yourself up against what firefighters commonly call "The "Beast."

Watch Signs -- What to be aware of, places to check fire weather, lightning ignition potential, controlled burns, etc.
Fire Behavior -- Knowing fire behavior may help you to avoid getting trapped by one.
Surviving -- How to escape a wild fire, sheltering in a vehicle vs. running away, creating your own safe area, etc.
